A company premises may face many types of emergency situations such as fire, explosion, release of potentially toxic chemicals, fall from a height, confined space incident, etc. It is critical for every organization to have an Incident Command Centre and a well-prepared Emergency Response Team that can reach the emergency site immediately and carry out rescue & evacuation of any trapped personnel.
Why Rescue Training?
Did you know that more than 60% of workers die in Confined Spaces while attempting fellow workers’ rescue? This generally happens when the person working inside a confined space becomes unresponsive, and the “hole watcher” responsible for monitoring the work goes into the confined space to check on his partner and is overcome by the same deadly gas.
In general, rescue training is required at almost all the workplaces wherever the work operations require a worker to access heights or entry into Confined Spaces. There are mainly 3 types of situations for rescue in an industrial scenario.
1) Rescue a victim from Heights
2) Rescue a victim from a Confined Space or
3) Rescue a victim from a combined scenario (Height & Confined), For example, rescue a victim from Silo.
Having a competent Rescue Team is one of the essential requirements of Disaster Management and Risk Mitigation. But how to prepare a rescue team?
Standards followed by Emergency Rescuers
Globally there are two standards that state clear guidelines for Rescuer Competency:
- NFPA 1670:2017- Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents
- NFPA 1006:2017- Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications
Requirements of Emergency Rescue Team (ERT)
Recommended – 6; Minimum – 4;
Roles & responsibilities
- Rescue Team Leader – 1
- Entry Rescuers – 2
- Rescue system operators – 2
- Communicator with Incident Command Center – 1
Who can take this Training?
- Rescue Personnel (ERT)
- Fire Fighters
- Fire Marshals
- Disaster Management Team
- First Responders
- Security Personnel
In addition, the ERT Team requires a Rescue Kit which can be readily deployed when the situation arises. Here is what a Rescue Kit should contain –
Training is crucial to build the capacity of responders, usage of Rescue Kit and improve their preparedness. It will ensure they do not put themselves in danger during rescue operation and are able to take critical decisions in a high-tension scenario. Some essential trainings are listed below-
- Training on Rescue Techniques
- Training on Advanced First Aid CPR
Moreover, improved technical skills would aid in better coordination while utilizing disaster management tools effectively. As a result, threat to life and property could be eliminated or minimized, which in turn will uphold the reputation of the organization.
Post completing this training, the emergency response teams will be able to formulate & implement Rescue plan at their work sites.
